Ikosi-Ejinrin LCDA Spelling Bee: Winners Emerge, Sofiat Mohammed’s Triumph Earns Mother Job from Chairman
Monday, 29th September 2025 was a day of intellectual flair and community pride at the Council Secretariat Multipurpose Hall as Ikosi-Ejinrin Local Council Development Area hosted the preliminaries of the Annual Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition. The event brought together bright pupils and students from across the LCDA, and produced standout performances, none more compelling than that of Sofiat Mohammed.
Sofiat, JSS3 student of Community Junior Academy, Odo-Ayandelu, clinched first place in the Secondary School category. She previously made headlines in 2022 when she won the Primary School category at both LCDA and state levels and was awarded a ₦250,000 scholarship by the Executive Chairman, Otunba-Akogun Wale Raji Anomo. Yesterday’s victory earned her the symbolic role of One-Day Chairman, during which she asked for additional support for her education and for employment for her mother — requests the Chairman graciously granted on the spot.
The competition showcased remarkable poise and word mastery from participants across the council. In the Primary School category, the top three finishers were:
• 1st Place: Baruwa Khafid — Baptist Day Primary School, Agbowa
• 2nd Place: Jude Faith — Baptist Day Primary School, Agbowa
• 3rd Place: Adeleke Emmanuel — RCM Primary School, Ketu
In the Secondary School category, the podium finishers were:
• 1st Place: Sofiat Mohammed — Community Junior Academy, Odo-Ayandelu
• 2nd Place: Okunade Paul — Community Senior Academy, Odo-Ayandelu
• 3rd Place: Ajube Esther — Community Senior Academy, Odo-Ayandelu
The first-place winners from each category will represent Ikosi-Ejinrin LCDA at the Lagos State finals.
The First Lady, Dr. Nofisat Olajumoke Anomo, represented at the event by Mrs. Somoye, H.O.D., Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation (WAPA). In her remarks, urged students to view education as the surest path to success and encouraged them to remain disciplined and committed to learning.
Executive Chairman Otunba-Akogun Wale Raji Anomo, joined by the Council manager Mr. Sunday Awobajo and Council Treasurer, Mr. Lawal Adeshina to receive the students in his office, applauded the participants and their teachers for the high standard of preparation and intellectual discipline displayed. He urged the LCDA’s representatives to continue their rigorous preparation ahead of the state competition and promised a special celebration should they return as state champions. The Chairman also reaffirmed his administration’s sustained investment in education, describing it as the bedrock of the LCDA’s future.
The event was attended by officials from the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), management staff, teachers from participating schools, and other stakeholders. The warm reception for the winners and the immediate support extended to Sofiat’s family reinforced the day’s theme: talent nurtured with compassion yields lasting community impact.
